Who Can Have Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks are a common condition that plagues almost all women who have gone through pregnancy. In fact, statistics show that around 50 up to 90 percent of pregnant women have had it at one point in their pregnancy.

Other people may also get marks in fact, everybody is at risk for developing it. Non-pregnant women, men, children, teens going through rapid growth , weight lifters, or anyone else who experiences any form of rapid growth or extreme changes in weight may get stretch marks.

Almost all stretch marks develop on a womans abdomen starting on her sixth month of pregnancy onwards. This is when her belly is stretching in order to accommodate the growing baby inside. Thus, the skin of her belly is pushed to the limits of its elasticity.

Other women also get stretch marks on their upper arms, breasts, lower back, hips, buttocks, and thighs. These unsightly marks are usually found around the areas of the body that store the most amount of fat.

How Do Stretch Marks Arise?

When the layers of skin and the tissue beneath them are pulled and get stretched beyond their maximum capacity for expansion, the collagen structure located deep within them start to break apart. The skin actually tears so microscopic bleeding occurs.

When these tiny wounds heal, scar tissue is formed. This scar is what we commonly call stretch marks. It generally appears as thin lines that may be pink, purple, red or dark brown in color. They vary in length from as tiny as a centimetre or up to 10 centimetres.

Stretch marks are most noticeable during their early stages of formation, but as time goes by they will slowly fade away in color and turn into a few shades lighter than the surrounding skin tone.

Stretch Marks Risk Factors

There are different factors that can increase your chances of developing stretch marks. Genetics is among these factors. Your family history can give you a clue whether or not youll get marks. For instance, if your sister or mother got them during their pregnancy, youll be likely to have them yourself. Aside from genetic predisposition, other risk factors for stretch marks include the following:

- Skin color fair skin tone tend to get stretch marks more.

- Nutrition intake the proper diet will make the skin healthy and help it stretch better.

- Overall skin health dry skin is generally less elastic than firm and supple skin.

- Proportion of weight gain this also includes how rapidly you gained weight.

- Pregnancy concerns this includes whether you are having a big baby, or have twins or triplets and whether you are naturally small or if you have excessive amounts weight gain.

Practicing preventive measures will help a lot in minimizing the number and severity of marks that youll develop during and after childbirth. Keeping your skin well-hydrated before or at the start of your pregnancy will help you avoid stretch marks. Using creams and other moisturizing products will also help. You should also eat right and exercise to avoid excessive weight changes and keep your skin toned.

Body Glitches

Few of us make it to adulthood without a few surface imperfections – perhaps a scar from a teenage cycling accident, a strange mole caused by past sun exposure, or broken veins brought on by birth control pills, pregnancy, or just plain genetics. If you’re like me, these skin glitches make me dread summertime, when I have to decide between the comfort of sundresses, shorts, and sleeveless shirts, or the camouflaging ability of long skirts, pants, and sleeved shirts. Fortunately for women like me, there is a host of new treatments available to reduce the appearance of surface flaws. Most scars cannot be eliminated completely, but they can be softened.

Scars

Like many of you, I have quite a number of scars on my legs, thanks to childhood bicycling accidents, teenage clumsiness, and an adult run-in with an adorable yet feisty kitten.

I’ve found that exfoliating ingredients such as glycolic acid and salicylic acid help soften the appearance of scars, as do pigment-lightening ingredients such as kojic acid and hydroquinone.

For bad scars onion extract (abo called cepium allium) has been found to soften the appearance of all types of scars when used two to four times a day for 1 to 4 months. Topical gels or bandages containing silicone have also been shown to soften the appearance of all types of scars. You either use the gel two to four times a day or wear the bandage continually for 4 months. A dermatologist can also soften the appearance of scars through microdermabrasion, or lazer resurfacing.

A scar is the skin’s healing response to an injury or wound and is composed mostly of inelastic collagen fibers. Scar tissue is disorganized and appears distinctively different from the normal tissue surrounding it.

Mole check

Moles are not inherently dangerous. It is only “irregular” moles – or a mole’s sudden “irregular” behavior – that may indicate you’ve got skin cancer. To catch a potential problem while it is still small, examine your entire body monthly, carefully studying each mole. Contact your dermatologist if you find any of the following signs:

A mole that has changed color, size, or shape.

A mole that itches, bleeds, or has a crusty surface.

A mole With an asymmetrical border.

Stretch marks

Stretch marks, known medically as striae gravidarum, are fissures in skin’s middle layer. They occur when the body grows faster than the skin can accommodate, which makes adolescence, pregnancy; sudden weight gain, or quick muscle-building all prime times for stretch marks to develop. While stretch marks do fade with time, they often remain visible enough to make you self-conscious.

Perhaps no other skin glitch seems to cause such dissension among dermatologists. Some say stretch marks are treatable, some say the marks are mildly treatable, and others say there is nothing you can do to make them better. Daily applications of a trentinoin cream, or a product containing glycolic acid or onion extract, have been shown to soften the marks in some people. So have microdermabrasion, intense pulsed light treatments, and lazer resurfacing. And there are people who swear by pure vitamin E or jojoba oil. If you have stretch marks and want them gone, you may have to experiment with- several types of treatments to get results.

Acne and Scarring

Let’s face it acne and scaring go hand in hand. Now you can suffer from mild acne and your scars will be barely noticeable and will fade with time or you can have severe acne and suffer from pock marks and long term scaring.

Scarring is the body’s natural healing process when the dermis is damaged. The body lays down a layer of collagen fibers which is a protein produced by the body. The body cannot regenerate the tissue exactly how it was so the new tissue will have a new texture, color and inferior quality than the surrounding tissue. The scar tissue may be more sensitive to light and to the touch.

The amount of scar tissue depends on the severity of the wound. In the case of acne, the skins scar tissue depends on the type of acne you have. Most white heads form a small layer of scar tissue that will fade over time. There may be slight discoloration but that can be treated with many over the counter products. These products generally come in the form of creams and gels. They soften the skin and reduce the visual effects of the scar. This form of scar treatment is far less expensive than surgical procedures and recommended for minor scaring.

Cystic acne on the other hand tends to cause pock marks (craters on the face) due to tissue damage under the skins surface. The white blood cells will fight the bacteria trapped under the skins surface causing infection. The infection is what produces the puss excretions and damages the underlying tissue. Those who have drained their own acne cysts understand this. The craters can be temporarily treated with collagen injections. This will fill the hole but must be repeated regularly to maintain the effect. Lazer treatments and dermabrassion removes the top layer of skin which help flatten the raised skin. Redness will occur and your skin will be sensitive but this will subside within a few months.

There is no permanent scar removal. Once your skin is damaged it is permanent. Lazer treatments, dermabrassion, and over the counter creams and gels are just an attempt to lessen the visual effects of the scar so it is not as noticeable. Some creams can do this on minor scars and stretch marks but have their limitations when it comes to major scaring. One should consult a dermatologist before attempting to treat any severe acne scarring and get a second opinion as well. The appearance of the skin is what someone has to live with for the rest of their life; they should not take any surgical procedures lightly.

The trick to treating scars is prevention. Don’t sit around and wait until it’s too late. There are many acne treatment systems that will reduce if not eliminate your acne. Believe me they are worth every penny if they can prevent the psychological effects acne scaring will have on you for the rest of your life.

Why suffer when you can treat it?

Stomach Stretch Marks Causes and Solutions

Stretch marks may appear on your belly and can make you feel too embarrassed to wear a bikini on the beach, to change clothes in front of other women at the gym, or even to undress in front of your husband. Stomach stretch marks appear as a result of great weight gain and loss, usually due to pregnancy. Pregnancy stretch marks can leave unattractive, reddish purple marks covering your hips and breasts, but are particularly inclined to mark your belly.
Erase Old Stretch Marks

Stretch marks appear when the skin is pulled beyond its ability to stretch, resulting in tiny tears. When these tears heal, they are replaced with scar tissue. These rippled and pale scars are what we call striae, or stretch marks. Because scar tissue contains less pigment than normal skin, they stay paler than the rest of your skin when you tan. Striae often begin as red, angry ripples, which turn into silvery white ripples as the years go by.
The skin is a remarkable organ. It’s not only the largest organ in the body, but also one of the most complex. Collagen and elastin, two proteins that give skin its binding nature and elasticity, allow the skin to stretch to extremes. When our skin doesn’t have the necessary amounts of collagen and elastin, stomach stretch marks can appear. In order to prevent stretch marks, it is helpful to apply a high quality cream that contains elastin and collagen regenerative triggers. By applying these triggers to your skin, twice a day you can help your skin’s recovery. This is not done with a cream that contains bovin collagen or elastin, ingredients that only achieve a temporarily moist attraction to your skin. This is done by using a cream that contains elements similar to those found in our own bodies. You can also apply a cream that triggers the replacement of damaged skin cells and the production of new collagen and elastin to repair striae that have already occurred.
There are some creams that contain biological activators like those of your body’s own reconstructive processes to prevent and eliminate stretch marks. These creams trigger and regulate an orderly production of collagen, elastin and GAGs and the replacement of damaged skin with healthy skin cells.
With regular use (twice a day for a period of time depending on how serious the blemishes are) these types of cream ‘digests’ damaged cells, gently dissolves skin lesions, reduces and even erases all signs of stretch marks. It also destroys pathogens and triggers the synthesis of normal collagen, improving elasticity.

Stretch marks occur in the middle layer of the skin called as dermis. As long as there is support with the dermis, you will never see any stretch marks. When the skin is constantly stretched, the dermis breaks down leading to stretch marks.

During pregnancy, especially at the beginning of third trimester, stretch marks usually appear on the tummy. This can happen due to the rapid enlargement of the uterus, then it makes the stretching of the skin of the tummy. The skin in some parts somehow loses its elasticity, and when the baby born, the skin becomes suddenly flabby, and the stretch marks don’t seem want to go from the tummy.

A specific treatment for stretch marks that could completely remove the stretch marks and return the skin to its natural color is not available till date.

Vitamin E is available in a variety of different forms, such as alpha, beta, delta, and gamma tocopherol. The variety with the highest bioactivity for topical use on the skin surface is alpha-tocopherol. It has shown a great variety of skin benefits in clinical studies, such as reduction in scarring and the reduction of stretch marks. The effect of vitamin E on stretch marks is thanks to its regenerative effect on skin. Vitamin E penetrates deeply into the skin to stimulate the growth of new cells, replacing the scar tissue found under stretch marks.

The key to avoiding stretch marks is to use a topical skin cream during pregnancy. Revitol and Strivectin are the most commonly recommended as they contain many important skin healing ingredients including Aloe Vera and Vitamin E. Many women use these in conjunction with coco butter lotions on the areas most likely to be affected by stretch marks (the stomach, breasts, and thighs) and are often able to prevent them all together.

Stretch marks are very common for both the sexes, male and female. Stretch marks are also very common among over weight people. Stretch marks are not, in any way, harmful but they can be irritated or dry and are unattractive. Many people believe that stretch marks are incurable. Adding to some of the confusion surrounding stretch marks are the overly inflated claims of stretch mark reduction products on the market. Many of good, high quality creams and oils were created to infuse below your outer dermis and penetrate where your stretch marks are forming.

Stretch marks are irregular, linear scars that appear on your skin during pregnancy or quick weight gain times. Their scientific name is striae distensae, and they are really scar tissue.
Stretch marks happen due to exaggerated stretching of the epidermis (the external layer of the skin) and the dermis, which is the layer of skin beneath that consists of connective tissue, blood vessels and collagen.
As the skin is stretched, the normal production of collagen is altered and stretch marks appear. In theory, they can appear anywhere on the body, but the main areas afflicted are places where the body fluctuates in size.

Pregnancy stretch marks use to appear on the breasts, stomach, hips, thighs and buttocks.
But if you believe it’s only pregnancy, and being female, that puts you at risk of stretch marks, you’re wrong. Body fat has a part to play in the formation of stretch marks, so they can affect anyone who gains weight rapidly. Bodybuilders can also develop stretch marks, and young men can suffer them around the shoulder skin if they have a bit of a growth spurt or have a bit of excess weight on their backs.
One thing many women ask is, are stretch marks hereditary?
Some connective tissue conditions make some persons prone to stretch marks, but they only affect a very small group of the population.
As far as developing stretch marks as a result of pregnancy goes, if your mother suffered them it doesn’t necessarily mean you will. It is largely down to how much weight you gain during the pregnancy. Also, having kids close together doesn’t elevate the chances.
Stretch marks commonly begin as reddish lines on the skin, which implies the stretch mark, or scar, is inflamed. If you do nothing to it, eventually the inflammatory element disappear and the mark changes in color to silver or white.
The bad thing is that stretch marks never really disappear. But there are several remedies for stretch marks you can try to improve their look.
One is a vascular laser, which is virtually painless and can improve the color and texture of the scars in some patients.
Skin care treatments include a variety of over-the-counter creams and oils, many of which can be applied to the skin in areas at risk during and after pregnancy, and prescription creams containing retinoids and vitamin A can also be applied post-pregnancy.
Diet can help avoid stretch marks too. Eating a balanced, healthy diet can really help. You won’t have a big increase in your weight during pregnancy, and an extra is that you won’t have a lot of weight to lose afterwards.

STRETCH MARKS

Stretch marks (striae) are relatively common, even in males. It is not completely understood how they form, but there are several theories. One is that stretch marks form simply when the skin is stretched to the point of breaking and a scar is formed. Another interesting theory is that stretch marks are caused by an increased level of glucocorticoids (cortisol). Glucocorticoids prevent connective tissues from forming the collagen and elastin fibers need to keep the skin tight, and dermal layer then tears. Some people may be more genetically prone to stretch marks than others. Skin type may be a factor; dryer skin has less elasticity than oily skin, and is more prone to stretch marks.

TREATING STRETCH MARKS

There are several extra steps you can take for the reduction of your stretch marks. Consider your skin care regimen, and fine-tune it to meet the needs of skin that is damaged, requires cellular repair and the stimulation of collagen and elastin production.

Nutrition: An adequate amount of water, vitamins E, C, selenium, and alpha lipoic acid, as well as enough monounsaturated fats (olive oil) and gamma lineolic acid (borage oil) are vital for keeping your skin strong and healthy and able to repair itself.

The basic treatment for the reduction of the appearance of scars is to regularly 1) remove the overgrown scar tissue with brisk exfoliation and then 2) encourage the regrowth of normal tissues with use of nutrients and conditioners.

If stretch marks have formed because of weight gain, reducing bodyfat stores (losing weight) can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks by releasing pressure from the skin.

Exfoliation: Stretch marks are similar to scars, there can be either a build up of scar tissue, which results in a raised stretch mark, or tearing and obvious depressions in the skin. Stretch marks respond well to vigorous exfoliation with both mechanical and chemical means. Your goal is to break down the malformed collagen and have it slough off, while new, properly constructed collagen and skin cells are formed below. You may wish to perform at least a light exfoliation on the stretch marks on a daily basis. You can use a massage tool to improve the breakdown of scar tissues. Applying alpha hydroxy peel products, such as retinol, glycolic or lactic acid, has shown to be effective for the improvement of stretch marks.

Protection: After exfoliating, apply antioxidant formulas with A, E, C, and alpha lipoic acids to protect the new skin cells from damage. If skin is to be exposed to the sun, apply a sunscreen to prevent further breakdown of newly formed skin cells.

Moisturizer: After exfoliating skin and applying antioxidants, moisturize the area thoroughly. If you are prone to stretch marks, remember to moisturize your body skin daily to avoid developing more stretch marks with weight changes. Aloe Vera should be used to improve skin microcirculation, followed by a layer of lipid-based cream or lotion.

Other Treatments:

 Sleep: Get plenty of sleep to help your skin regenerate.

 Milk Bath: You can soak your entire body with softening lactic acid by adding a cup or two of skin milk powder to your bath and soaking for 15 to 20 minutes several times a week. For extra enjoyment, add a few drops of your favorite scent to the bath. Rinse the milk bath off under the shower, but do not use soap. If youre sweaty or dirty, take a quick shower with a mild soap before your milk bath. Moisturize your body skin thoroughly afterwards.

 You can prepare your own tinctures and creams, or look for commercial products that contain ingredients known to improve the appearance of stretch marks.

The following nutrients may be helpful in the treatment of stretch marks:

The Perfect Way To Reduce And Prevent The Appearance of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are as a result of rapid growth or stretching in your skin. When your skin is overstretched the normal production of collagen is disrupted, as a result of this scars called stretch marks may form. Stretch marks are usually most common during puberty, pregnancy, weight gain and bodybuilding all times when your skin is being stretched and is changing more than normal.Stretch marks start out as microscopic tears in skin layers due to overstretching of the dermis.

Aloe vera can help to heal these small wounds by preventing scar tissue to form. Meaning that it prevents stretch marks forming. Aloe vera has many many uses and has been used for thousands of years to heal scars, soothe burns and moisturize and heal skin.

B5 or DL-Penthenol soothes skin while stimulating cell growth and differentiation. Aiding in the regeneration of the skin and reducing the appearance of existing stretch marks by replacing the scar tissue with new skin cells. It also helps to promote collagen and elastin

production, which means your skin is able to stretch without rupturing and causing stretch marks.

A natural antibiotic used for many different types of skin ailments is grapefruit seed extract. Helping to restore damaged collagen and elastin. How strong your skins connective tissues are also dictates how well the skin contracts after pregnancy.

Naturally found in olive oil squalene oil has very strong regenerative properties. When applied to your skin it acts as a natural protector and also stimulates regeneration of your skin surface. Squalene oil is an essential ingredient in the prevention of the treatment of scars.

Vitamin A is probably better known to you for having positive effects on vision. You maybe surprised to hear that Vitamin A also plays a very important part to our biggest organ, our skin.

Another vitamin necessary for new skin cell production is Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 compliments Vitamin A and E in the regeneration process of the epidermis,(the outside layer of your skin). On exposure to sunlight the skin normally produces Vitamin3 ,due to modern day lifestyles it is difficult for the skin to produce the required amount of vitamin D required.

Finally Vitamin E has been shown to reduce scarring and therefore reduces stretch marks. Vitamin E has a regenerative effect on your skin. Vitamin E stimulates the growth of new skin calls and is therefore a powerful preventative treatment. Making the skin less likely to tear and therefore scar and reduce the chance of stretch marks.

Now you could take each of the above ingredients separately if you so wished to help reduce the appearance of Stretch marks. However a much better, easier and effective solution would be using a stretch mark product that contains all these key ingredients. Helping you to prevent and reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

Stretch marks can be described as visible linear scars. Stretch marks form in areas where the skin is incapable of withstanding overstretching and the elastin and collagen fibers reach their capacity. Skin weakens and eventually fail resulting in tears in the dermal skin layer. This shows up on a thinner skin surface as visibly curled stripes and in fact are bands of elastin broken beneath the skin. Hence stretch marks are scars formed inside out rather than from the outside. Thus stretch marks are the response of the body to heal overstretched thin skin and appear in the form of scar tissue. Using its own resources the body uses stretch marks to heal itself as quick as it can. However once these scars are formed they are prominent because of their depth, length, discoloration, and texture it is thus very difficult to get rid of them.

Stretch marks may occur during pregnancy, growth spurts, bodybuilding while on steroids, or when other hormonal imbalances may be at work. In the United States alone stretch marks effect approximately 90% of pregnant women, 70% of adolescent females, and 40% of adolescent males. Any discolouration that occurs from stretch marks tends to fade over time however rarely does the skins striated appearance return to normal.
Its speculated that the way a person’s skin heals is a good indicator of the depth and severity of stretch marks they may eventually see. People whose skin that heals poorly (or slowly) or tends to develop raised or thickened scars can generally expect stretch marks that are more pronounced than those who whose skin heals with minimal scarring.
Treating Stretch Marks
One of the best things you can do is to minimise the development of stretch marks in the first place. By eating a healthy balanced diet full of fruit and vegetables and drinking lots of water you going a long way to prevent stretch marks. Moisturized skin is more elastic and thus less likely to form stretch marks so this is an important prevention. Furthermore regular exercise will help keep your skin healthy and elastic.
A range of different treatments have tried to have tried to prevent stretch marks or improve their appearance. Most stretch mark treatments found on the market aim to replenish the skin matrix by stimulating the making of collagen and elastin.
This approach is usually insufficient or fails in people affected by atrophic skin, which is where the skin is thin and lacks strength the stretch beyond what its used to. Fortunately there are new creams by doctors being developed always and some have these have proved very effective especially for women with pregnancy stretch marks.
