How to get rid of stretch marks – Part 4

Stretchmarks are Beautiful

So it is time for a vacation and you guessed it we were going to the beach with family. I had been lucky and had gotten most of the baby weight off although I still seem to jiggle quite a bit more than I did prior to the little one. Oh well! So I start pulling out the bathing suits. Oh boy! Bikinis galore did I actually fit into these at one point? My breasts were still large from breastfeeding they were popping out of my tops. (Although I have to admit that I enjoy this part as I never had much of a chest to talk about prior to the baby.)

So I head off to the beach with my husband and baby in tow. Did I mention that we have 20 somethings in the family? Do I feel old or what in my thirties? So the first day we arrived I grab the bikini and put it on. As I looked at myself in the mirror a heavy sigh escaped my lips. There were stretchmarks everywhere breasts, thighs, stomach, on the side love handles. When I was actually pregnant they looked pretty small of course my stomach was so large that everything looked pretty small. During the pregnancy I put all the lotions on which were suppose to help prevent the stretch marks, who knows without it I might even have more! I have even tried some of those creams after the pregnancy which are suppose to help fade the marks although I don’t see much of a difference.

I didn’t let that deter me though and headed to the beach with the family. There I saw all the perfect bodies, but I have to say it didn’t bother me. Surprised? I was! What can I say, even all those beach bodies couldn’t compare with the delight my husband and I got from our little one. Even when two slim girls walked by I was happy to see my husband didn’t even glance at them. After all, he was too busy being entertained by our 6 month old covered in sand and squealing in delight as she tried to stuff handfuls of the sand in her mouth. (Although I will admit that in the photos our baby is always being held in front of my tummy and my stretchmarks.)

Everyone hates imperfections on their body, it doesn’t matter where they came from or where they are, and pregnancy is no different. Our skin gets stretched to what seems to be the point of no return and we are often left with stretch marks.

The skin can only stretch so far so fast, and when it does you are left with stretch marks, tiny tears that are under the skin. While very few people don’t get stretch marks, others might get ones that look very deep and are very purple.

The severity of the stretch marks you get will all depend on the elasticity of your skin.

As time goes on, stretch marks will not appear as deep or as purple. They will start to diminish, but will only go so far.

However, once you have stretch marks, there is no way to get rid of them without surgery. They are there for life, but there are ways to decrease the probability and severity of those stretch marks. What you do before you get the stretch marks is what will make all the difference.

To reduce the risk of stretch marks from pregnancy, exfoliate in the shower. Use a product that has at least a moderate exfoliator and moisturizes as well. A good body scrub will work very well for this. This will allow all the dead, hard skin to be removed.

After you shower and throughout the day, moisturize. Any area of the body where stretch marks might appear needs to be moisturized on a regular basis. Use a lotion that contains elastin or promotes the elasticity of the skin. If the lotion contains elastin it will usually state so right on the front of the bottle.

The stomach is not the only area that needs to be moisturized. Other areas that stretch marks are the sides of your back close to your belly, breasts, hips and the buttocks.

If you do these two things on a continual basis through your pregnancy, you will reduce the risk of getting stretch marks and if you do get some, they will not appear as bad.

Once your pregnancy is over, there is a way to diminish the look of stretch marks. It may not be for everyone, but tanning will lessen the appearance but will not do anything for getting rid of them.

Of course after time, the appearance of stretch marks will lessen and in some cases disappear.

There are many items on the market that claim to get rid of stretch marks and scars, but they are nothing more than a moisturizing lotion that contains elastin, and sometimes nothing at all and just simply do not work.

If you get stretch marks, don’t worry about them. Other than surgery there is nothing that will completely get rid of them. They are nothing to be ashamed of and women all over the world have them. Just think, when you kids are older, you can jokingly blame them for the stretch marks.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a normal part of puberty for most girls and guys. When a person grows or gains weight really quickly (like during puberty), that person may get fine lines on the body called stretch marks. Stretch marks occur in the dermis, the elastic middle layer of skin that allows it to retain its shape. However, when constantly stretched, the dermis can break down leaving behind stretch marks. It starts with natural ingredients that keep the skin ultra moist and elastic.

Men and women can get stretch marks on several areas of their bodies, including the abdominal area, thighs, hips, breasts, upper arms, or lower back. Stretch marks look like thin, stretched tissue, and that is more or less what they are. They appear in people who put on or lose weight rapidly. The upper layer of the skin is normal, but in the lower layer the collagen and elastic, which give the skin its strength and elasticity, have become thinner and broken. Stretch marks appear on the body in many different places for a variety of reasons. Stretch marks occur when the dermis, the middle layer of your skin, is stretched to a point where its elasticity begins to break down. At this point, microscopic bleeding occurs along with tissue inflammation which gives us the raised reddish purple look of newly formed stretch marks.

How to get Rid of Stretch Marks

Surgery is a possibility for tummy stretch marks if you also have a lot of loose skin on the tummy. The operation is a tummy tuck (removal of the skin and the fatty tissue beneath). You will be left with scars around the belly button and across the lower stomach. This is not a minor operation and, like all operations, it carries risks. Recovery takes several weeks.

Lotions and Creams-Drink plenty of water. Adequate hydration keeps your skin soft and less likely to develop stretch marks. Caffeine can increase your risk of stretch marks. If you’re stuck on your caffeinated coffee or tea, make sure you balance the fluids. Drink just as muchor morewater as you drink coffee, tea, or soda. Stretch marks can also result from nutritional deficiency. Be sure to consume foods that promote skin health: foods rich in zinc, such as nuts or fish; foods high in vitamins A and C.

Cocoa Butter-Remember that no lotion or cream can prevent or erase stretch marks because they form in layers of skin too deep for any moisturizer to reach. If your pregnant belly is tight and itchy, you can keep it more comfortable by applying a rich moisturizer frequently. Cocoa butter is widely recommended. Shea butter and jojoba oil aren’t as easy to find, but these also have many properties that can ease dry skin.

Laser Surgery- If you find your stretch marks very upsetting, a dermatologist may be able to help. *Microdermabrasion and lazer surgery are surgical options. If your appearance matters so much to you that you are seriously considering those options, a counselor might also be able to help.

Tretinoin cream – also called Retin-A. Studies have shown that this may help reduce stretch marks. Do not use this if you are breastfeeding, as there have been no studies conducted to determine whether its excreted in breast milk and what affect it can have on your baby.

There are many things to consider before you buy any stretch mark removal product. It is vital to gain an firm understanding on how these unsightly stripes which appear on your skin happen in the first place.

Don’t assume that only pregnant women can have stretch marks. These marks affect teenagers as well especially when they go through puberty. Stretch marks can be seen on people who put on or lose a lot of weight in a short period of time. These marks are commonly found at stomach, hip, buttocks, thighs, arms, and breast.

When women are expecting a child, the breasts and the abdomens are the most affected area. This is due to the imbalance of the hormones in women’s bodies. These changes weaken the skin’s structure in the pelvis to ease the birth of the child when the time comes. When the structural elements such as collagen becomes weak, then you will see the formation of stretch marks.

Stretch marks or striae gravidarum become apparent when the skin cannot handle too much pulling and stretching. The skin can only stretch or pull so much. Usually, you can stretch your skin within reasonable limits without causing any tear because the skin is fairly elastic. But if you stretch your skin beyond a certain limit, the body may not produce enough collagen to prevent tearing and this will cause the unwelcomed lines to develop.

Usually the color of the stretch marks is reddish or purplish when they first begin to develop. The lines may appear to be indented. The texture of the marks is not the same as the ones surrounding the marks. The stretched area is more transparent. You can see small blood vessels in the affected skin.

After awhile, the blood vessels shrink and the purplish color then gradually change to white. The white color shows that the fat under the skin is becoming transparent. Luckily, the colors of these ugly stripes often become lighter and almost vanish as time passes by.

In most cases, light skinned women tend to have pinkish stretch marks. But dark skinned women such as African American usually have stretch marks that are lighter and more clearer than the adjacent skin.

Body-builders are not spared from stretch marks because their skin experience rapid changes from the activity of by body-building repeated sets. Stretch marks also may develop if you apply steroid-containing skin creams or ointments for more than a few weeks, or consume high doses of oral corticosteroids for long periods.

A good stretch mark removal cream should help in transferring the skin enhancing ingredient to the dermal layer. This is to promote more collagen and elastin to be produced. By replacing new collagen and elastin, the resiliency of the firmness of the skin can be renewed. This will help to prevent future stretch marks.

Stretch mark removal creams should come with potent antioxidant substances that can slow down the degeneration of the skin’s support network. If the manufacturer add moisturizing oils such as palm, coconut, and olive oils that are rich with nutrients, your skin can be more elastic. This allows you to stretch your skin without leaving any marks behind. Not only should the cream work during pregnancy but also after pregnancy. This is beneficial when the skin returns to its usual shape. By improving the elasticity, you can prevent the skin from sagging significantly and developing ugly lines.

Stretch marks are irregular, linear scars that appear on your skin during pregnancy or quick weight gain times. Their scientific name is striae distensae, and they are really scar tissue.
Stretch marks happen due to exaggerated stretching of the epidermis (the external layer of the skin) and the dermis, which is the layer of skin beneath that consists of connective tissue, blood vessels and collagen.
As the skin is stretched, the normal production of collagen is altered and stretch marks appear. In theory, they can appear anywhere on the body, but the main areas afflicted are places where the body fluctuates in size.

Pregnancy stretch marks use to appear on the breasts, stomach, hips, thighs and buttocks.
But if you believe it’s only pregnancy, and being female, that puts you at risk of stretch marks, you’re wrong. Body fat has a part to play in the formation of stretch marks, so they can affect anyone who gains weight rapidly. Bodybuilders can also develop stretch marks, and young men can suffer them around the shoulder skin if they have a bit of a growth spurt or have a bit of excess weight on their backs.
One thing many women ask is, are stretch marks hereditary?
Some connective tissue conditions make some persons prone to stretch marks, but they only affect a very small group of the population.
As far as developing stretch marks as a result of pregnancy goes, if your mother suffered them it doesn’t necessarily mean you will. It is largely down to how much weight you gain during the pregnancy. Also, having kids close together doesn’t elevate the chances.
Stretch marks commonly begin as reddish lines on the skin, which implies the stretch mark, or scar, is inflamed. If you do nothing to it, eventually the inflammatory element disappear and the mark changes in color to silver or white.
The bad thing is that stretch marks never really disappear. But there are several remedies for stretch marks you can try to improve their look.
One is a vascular laser, which is virtually painless and can improve the color and texture of the scars in some patients.
Skin care treatments include a variety of over-the-counter creams and oils, many of which can be applied to the skin in areas at risk during and after pregnancy, and prescription creams containing retinoids and vitamin A can also be applied post-pregnancy.
Diet can help avoid stretch marks too. Eating a balanced, healthy diet can really help. You won’t have a big increase in your weight during pregnancy, and an extra is that you won’t have a lot of weight to lose afterwards.

Pregnant? Combat stretch marks – Part 3

The experts claim that stretch marks are more then likely genetic and if you get them then you get them. But I don’t know if I agree with this. After two pregnancies I have successfully combatted stretch marks and won.

I have always taken care of my skin. I’ve spent a lifetime smoothing on one kind of lotion or another. So when I found out at thirty eight that I was pregnant for the first time I was fearful of stretch marks and I decided to do whatever I could to prevent them. I was sure to not only use moisturizing soaps during my showers and baths but also lotions. Nothing too harsh. I know that a lot of people believe that Ivory is a mild soap but its not. Its harsh. No, I concentrated on soaps filled with oils and anti aging types which encourage a strong cell turnover and renewal.

I also used lots of bath oils in my bath every night which I would indulge in for long stretches of time. I felt that this helped lubricate my skin.

After bating I would always use Palmers Cocoa Butter all over my stomach, thighs, buttocks, and breasts. My mother had used it before my and so had my grandmother. Both had managed to combat stretch markes successfuly using cocoa butter based lotions.

So my first pregnancy I flew through without any stretch marks and my skin popped back with no problem. The same with my second pregnancy. I really do think that stretch marks are often caused by dry skin because lots of the pregnant women that I encountered during my pregnancy’s would complain that their abdomens actually itched and I felt this was due to a drying of the skin and not only stretching. During my second pregnancy I diligently followed the same regime that I undertook with my first pregnancy in the hopes of preventing stretch marks. This seemed to work wonderfully.

Lets not kid ourselves either, you will get stretch marks if you gain massive amounts of weight. During both pregnancies I gained very little weight. If I had put on the pounds I might have ultimately faced stretch marks and they could not have been prevented. I also think it has to do with the weight we gain. I have never gained a lot of weight during my pregnancies.

Most women who do end up with stretch marks are not ultimately bothered because they represent the badge of childbirth which is something to be applauded and sported proudly. Childbirth is a miracle. No amount of scaring matters when you hold your baby in your arms. They are worth everything in the world. All of us would gladly end up with stretch marks in order to have our children.

Pregnancy will affect your breast but there are several things you can do to limit the changes.

The most important thing you can do is to buy a good fitting bra. Most surveys agree that around 50% of woman wear the wrong siz bra. I would advise every woman to go and get your breasts measured. Wearing the right bra will help to minimize sagging and will make you more comfortable.

Your breasts will change size and shape during and after pregnancy so you may have to have your breasts measured every couple of months.

The next most important thing is to use a good stretch mark cream. Use this night and day on your breasts, stomach and hips. Continue using the cream until you wean your baby.

In my first pregnancy I only used stretch mark cream on my stomach. I was so naive that I didn’t know I could get stretch marks on my breasts. As a result, I didn’t get any stretch marks on my stomach but my breasts were covered in them.

The final thing to do is to do breast exercises. Hold your arms out at shoulder height and tense your chest muscles. Your breasts should lift slightly. Try to do at least 40-50 repetitions. This will strengthen the ligaments that hold your breasts up and will help to prevent sagging.

I’m a fourteen-year old girl with stretch marks on my breasts, stomach, arms, and sides. How do I get rid of them without surgery and prevent more?

Note: I am not and have not been pregnant. I just gained a lot of weight recently. If you’re going to just say, “Oh, she’s a fattie. Lose some weight fattie,” I do not need your opinion, then.
