Stretch marks, as the name suggests, are crack like lines that form on the skin. When skin is tight or lagging, the weight or pressure causes it to stretch further than it should. The connective tissue becomes damaged, and small tears form the lines we are referring to.

Who do they Affect?

Men and women both suffer from them, and most women get some after pregnancy. The most common reason for stretch marks appearing is after a person either loses weight or puts weight on over a short time. As all women do this when pregnant, a high percentage will have them. The areas affected most often are the breasts, hips, arms, thighs and abdomen.

Many people who have them become ashamed of their bodies. They are reluctant to wear swimmers or anything that reveals the lines. The problem with stretch marks is that you usually don’t know they are forming until it’s too late, and you suddenly have them.

Hormones can also affect the likelihood of stretch marks. This is why some teenagers will discover them during puberty, especially if their weight has fluctuated. Certain pharmaceuticals can contribute as well, such as steroids or the pill, bad diet or anxiety disorders.

Over the Counter Products

You can purchase any number of products for helping with your problem. Some stretch marks are light in color and easier to treat, where others can be pink, red or even purple and very raised and lumpy. The latter is much harder to repair, so do your research before handing over a fortune. There are people who swear by some of the brands on the market today, and some are guaranteed to at least make them fade. There are also excellent creams to maintain skin elasticity for preventing them in the first place.

Avoid caffeine and keep up the water intake, ensuring you drink at least eight glasses a day. You need a diet full of adequate vitamins and minerals, and exercise regularly to keep your skin toned. If you want to lose weight, you are better off doing it gradually.

Treatment Options

If you treat your stretch marks sooner rather than later, your chances of success are much higher. There are creams, beauty treatments, scrubs and lazer therapy which all have their fans. Retin-A is one that can be used on darker lines with positive results, as long as they haven’t been there for more than twelve months. There is also microderm abrasion, but it can hurt and is expensive. Although Lasers are very efficient, you can spend thousands on treatments and they can be such agony some people need anesthesia to get through.

There really are no guaranteed treatments for stretch marks. With the right product used the right way, along with diet, exercise and hydration, you should be able to make them fade. With so many people hiding theirs, you certainly shouldn’t be ashamed. They are a natural part of life, so look at them more like signs of experience and maturity.

Do Treatments Work?

You can purchase any number of products for helping with your stretch mark problem. Some are light in color and easier to treat, where others can be pink, red or even purple and very raised and lumpy. The latter is much harder to repair, and lazer treatment may be the only option. There are people who swear by some of the treatments on the market, and some are guaranteed to at least make them fade. There are also excellent creams to maintain skin elasticity for preventing them in the first place.

Summary:

People who drop pounds rapidly or vice versa will often get stretch marks. These marks are like cracks made from scar tissue, and are actually signs of the connective skin tissue having been damaged. There are many treatments on the market you can try, some more affordable than others.

Ways to minimize stretch marks

There really is no way to prevent or minimize stretch marks during pregnancy. You either get stretch marks or you don’t. I think mothers should go ahead and use cocoa butter anyway if it makes them feel better, but it really does not make a difference as far as I know and what I have been told by doctors. My doctor explained that stretch marks are from within so nothing you apply on the outside will prevent them from forming. I did not want to believe there was nothing I could do about it and many mothers told me to try cocoa butter so I did. I applied a concentrated cocoa butter formula on my belly and my breasts everyday twice a day when I was about 5 months pregnant until birth. I already had stretch marks on my breasts but figured if I used cocoa butter it would prevent new ones from forming. At first I thought it was working, but two weeks before I had my son I took another look under my belly and of course there were stretch marks. After I had my son, my breasts became larger so I got even more stretch marks. The ones on my belly looked worse than before also, but I heard this was common after pregnancy. After my pregnancy I went back and asked the mothers who suggested cocoa butter if they got any stretch marks, they admitted they did. So I do not understand how they thought it helped. I only know one mother who used cocoa butter and did not get any stretch marks and that was probably luck. Despite all this, expectant mothers shouldn’t worry too much about stretch marks. This is the sacrifice we make when we decide to have our precious bundles of joy. Besides, it only takes a few months for a woman’s body to get back to normal after pregnancy if she works at it. By the time a mother gets back to her normal size and shape, the stretch marks will have significantly faded. I am still waiting to fit into my normal size and I still have most of my stretch marks. It has been two months but I am confident my stretch marks will be a lot less noticeable in a little while because I noticed other mothers undergo drastic changes concerning the color and size of their stretch marks within a few months. I know some people decide to use fading creams but most of these products are a waste of money. I have heard from many other people that none of these products gave the expected results. The best advice mothers should listen to is just to let nature do its job.

Stretch Marks – What you Need to Know!

Most commonly stretch marks are associated with pregnant women. For many, it is a major concern as pregnancy progresses. Often overlooked are those incurred due to growth or major weight gain. These marks can come as a major shock, often causing significant insecurities among teens and singles. Im surprised to learn how little some really know about stretch marks, how they occur, and what can be done to prevent or diminish them. I get really upset by those fooled into thinking miracle potions or in some cases plastic surgery can get rid of them. So lets clear this up right now!

Stress marks are caused by any type of rapid weight gain. Pregnancy of course is one of the most common occurrences of such weight gain. However most dont know they are a natural part of puberty for most girls and guys. As is usually the case there are many different theories as to what causes stretch marks. Some assert that stress marks can occur w/o out any weight gain whatsoever. Usually pointing to hormones, genetics, diet, and other things I wouldnt bother justify by listing here. I would certainly agree some of these elements do play a part. Hormonal differences are present during pregnancy and adolescence. Steroids can cause rapid increases in muscle mass. Family history or genetics is certainly a large factor in increasing your probability of being prone to this condition. So what exactly is a stretch mark?

Simply put, a stretch mark is a scar. Caused by the overstretching or tearing of the skin. They can vary in color from light pink, to dark purple. Over a long period of time, the marks will often fade to a faint pale or silvery white. However the scars remain. Stretch marks can occur anywhere on the body, but will most commonly occur in the breasts, thighs, hips or butt.

Just how in the hell do you get rid of stretch marks? Well the only simple answer is you cant. Most stretch marks will diminish over time. There are a variety of treatments you can try to help this process along. Lotions and creams can be used to tighten and firm the skin. This may lessen the appearance of stretch marks discoloration and depth. Often times this is a temporary solution that subsides as you stop using the product. If a company claims their product can ELIMINATE stretch marks, RUN. There is one thing I can not emphasize enough: DO NOT BREAK THE BANK ON ANY STRETCH MARK DIMINISHING PRODUCT OR TREATMENT IN AN IMMEDIATE GUT REACTION! Give your body time and see how much they fade naturally before spending more than 20 bucks. This is especially true if you are a teenager. Wait until your body is done growing!

Okay so its been two years, the stretch marks are still very much there, what about plastic surgery? There are numerous options available that are successful for many people. But results will vary so dont just expect to look 17 again. Ask for recommendations from your dermatologist or family doctor. Review the doctors credentials carefully. How many treatments have they performed? Get before and after pictures of previous patients. Price will usually be a factor but treatments such as chemical peels are a lower cost option. Most common stretch mark reduction procedures performed are Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels, Lazer Scar Reduction, and in certain cases Abdominoplasty. Unfortunately your insurance company will not cover any costs, considering treatments a cosmetic issue. If you can find one that will, email me, I wanna sign up!

If youre hitting the beach this weekend or have an upcoming pool party dont freak out just yet. You can easily make stretch marks less noticeable. Spray on and lotion sunless tanners can help a lot. Note: I am not recommending a real tan. Tanning beds and sun will do little as the stretch marks themselves are less likely to tan. You can also conceal stretch marks with body makeup to match your skin tone. This is the most effective in making stretch marks completely disappear. If youre just laying out or enjoying a few of my favorite Mojitos with the girls body makeup is the solution. However if your spending much time in the water you may run in to problems, even if you are using waterproof cosmetics. Dont forget a little creativity in style can go a long way. The new style boy shorts will cover upper thighs and buttocks. How about a sassy sarong or jazzy cover-up?

There is nothing you can do to prevent stretch marks. However you can reduce the chances of getting them. Proper diet and nutrition is absolutely the single most important thing that is actually in your control. Keeping weight gain at a moderate and healthy rate is important. And not just for that slim figure!

The main cause for stretch mark appearance it the loss of skin’s elastin and collagen. This loss can happen in two ways. The first one is hormonal changes due to an illness or prolonged steroid use; both of these conditions can result in stretch marks.
But the most common reason stretch marks appear is because the skin is stretched more than normal, producing a rupture of tissue fibers. When this rupture of tissues happen, a stretch mark develops and can be observed in the external layer of the skin.
Usually, individuals are surprised to learn that stretch marks are actually a kind of scarring. When the skin is overstretched and collagen synthesis is disrupted, a kind of scar forms. At first, stretch marks look as lines that have a reddish or purple coloration. After a while, the color varies, resulting in a light, faded look.
Quick growth frequently results in stretch marks. If an individual gains weight rapidly, he or she may suffer them. Upon losing weight, the skin is no longer overstretched and the marks may become less obvious. Like all scars, however, they do not fade completely.
Pregnant women can also suffer stretch marks. The quick increase in weight and girth that a woman undergoes during pregnancy can cause stretch marks to appear. Even if a woman size doesn’t increase enough to overstretch her skin, she can suffer stretch marks due to the hormonal changes that happen during pregnancy. But if neither the physical nor hormonal causes are present a woman can survive a pregnancy stretch mark free.
Enceinte women are not alone in their fight to rid stretch marks. Anyone who experiences weight fluctuations can suffer them. Teens may suffer them as the result of growth spurts and bodybuilders can suffer from them as well. Individuals dealing with obesity are also prone to stretch marks.
Although stretch marks can develop on any part of the skin, they are most common in patches that have the most stored fat and are the most prone to stretch. These areas include the abdomen, breasts, and buttocks. They are also common on both inner and outer thighs, as well as the upper arms and the underarms.
Most people consider these scars aesthetically unpleasant, specially when their own skin is plagued by stretch marks. Rid their skin from them seems to be a priority; however, they don’t imply a health risk. They usually have a soft touch and a slightly empty appearance.
Many individuals have used creams, lotions, and other products made to prevent stretch marks. Most health care professionals agree that moisturizing lotions and creams cannot hurt, but, unfortunately, are unable to help. Some cosmetic treatments, like microdermabrasion, can be helpful in getting rid of stretch marks. Tretinoin cream, usually called Retin-A, can also be useful in making them less evident.
