What exactly are pregnancy stretch marks?

Stretch marks are defined in Dermatology as scar formation on the skin with a silvery white hue. When they first appear on the skin they may be reddish or purple in color but as time passes they gradually fade to a pale white color and the skin in that area is very soft to touch.

Why and where do they occur?

The human skin includes the outer epidermal layer, the inner dermis layer and the subcutaneous stratum. The dermis is the layer that helps the skin retain its shape and the pregnancy stretch marks appear on the dermis as a result of excessive stretching and sudden weight gain. Pregnancy stretch marks may occur on breasts, belly, thighs, upper arms anywhere where fat tends to accumulate.

Various stretch mark treatments are available for stretch marks removal like ointments, the most popular of which is cocoa butter. You may also use Vitamin E oil or other ointments. If the stretch marks are really severe and these treatments do not help, consult your health care specialist, as there are lazer treatments, dermabrasion, tretenoin, isotretenoin, adepalin and many such methods are being discovered. It makes sense consulting your health care specialist before applying any lotions for pregnancy stretch marks, as it may be possible that some medications such as steroids or hormones may be causing the stretch marks.

Who is more prone to getting pregnancy stretch marks?

The more elastic your skin is the less prone you are to getting stretch marks

Sudden weight gain may cause stretch marks so eat healthy and cut down that extra fat.

Genetics plays an important part so if your mother got stretch marks it is likely that you would too.

If you are expecting multiples the chances of stretch marks is higher as the belly usually grows larger than other women

In case you developed stretch marks on your breast during puberty you are more likely to develop stretch marks

Pregnancy stretch marks should not be seen as such a big problem that it disturbs your peace of mind and happiness. Dont worry once your baby is born, after a year or so the marks tend to disappear or may appear as light lines. In case you would like to apply ointments like Tretinoin cream it is better to do it after delivery as it may affect your unborn baby. If you are breast-feeding, please consult your doctor before using stretch mark treatments because some treatments for pregnancy stretch marks may be harmful to the breast milk or probably affect the milk supply.

Stretch marks (striae) pink, red or purple streaks on the skin may occur where skin is rapidly stretched. Stretch marks are most often associated with rapid weight gain and pregnancy. Unfortunately, there are very few effective treatments for stretch marks.

Drink plenty of water. Adequate hydration keeps your skin soft and less likely to develop stretch marks. Caffeine can increase your risk of stretch marks. If you’re stuck on your caffeinated coffee or tea, make sure you balance the fluids. Drink just as muchor morewater as you drink coffee, tea, or soda. Stretch marks can also result from nutritional deficiency. Be sure to consume foods that promote skin health: foods rich in zinc, such as nuts or fish; foods high in vitamins A and C, such as carrots and citrus fruits and milk; protein-rich foods, such as eggs.

Anti-stretch mark creams provide a very comfortable and noninvasive treatment but are not very effective. This is because creams do not penetrate beyond the top layer of the skin. Thus, they do not reach the layer where the skin produces collagen. However, lazer removal of stretch marks treatment reaches the underlying levels of the skin and effectively repairs the damage.

Although lotions and creams containing cocoa butter or vitamin E aren’t harmful, they probably won’t help either. Some research has shown that tretinoin cream (Retin-A, Renova) may improve the appearance of recent stretch marks those that are less than six weeks old and still pink or red in color.

Stretch marks are deep scars, or scar tissue, that appears as stripes on the skin. They are commonly found on the stomach, legs, buttocks, and breasts, but may appear nearly anywhere. Extreme stretching of the skin causes tiny skin fibers to tear. There is no known remedy to repair these fibers, though there are many products and treatments available that can help lighten stretch marks and improve the look of the skin.

Laser therapy is another option if you’re looking to improve the appearance of stretch marks after delivery. According to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, a surgeon can use different types of lasers depending on the color of the stretch marks. One type reduces the color of dark stretch marks while another stimulates the production of pigment-making cells in already faded stretch marks. A newer type of lazer therapy can be used to stimulate the production of collagen and help restore the skin’s elasticity in depressed stretch marks.

The results were nothing short of incredible and I pressed her to find out a bit more about where she’d acquired these remarkable products. It turns out she’d sourced a publication on the net providing a heap of home remedies and recipes for reducing the appearance of stretch marks using very inexpensive everyday ingredients. She went on to say that all of these stretch mark home remedies and recipes are completely natural and are easily obtained from your local grocery, supermarket, or health food store.

Skin Creams and Lotions Lotions containing cocoa butter are rumored to not only help reduce stretch marks, but to help prevent them entirely. Any cream or oil that is made specifically for the prevention or treatment of stretch marks will help keep your skin healthy and elastic. If you are pregnant or breast feeding consult your doctor first as lotions can contain ingredients that may be passed to your unborn baby or into breast milk.
